Anyone who makes a living in this voiceover biz of ours will tell you that they have the best job on the planet. I still get up every morning and genuflect before my ISDN unit, giving thanks for the lifestyle it affords me, along with the time to pursue other creative outlets. For me, podcasting has become a fun and natural way to fill the gaps between sessions. It’s the ultimate “radio aerobic workout,” requiring creativity and discipline as a writer, producer, and performer.

My podcast is called “Hoytus Interruptus” and can be accessed through my home page at http://www.greaterradio.com (you’ll find Hoytus hiding beneath the cowboy hat). The show employs a technique I call “lyrical storytelling.” I write the script first and then choose appropriate music to go beneath it, tweaking the script along the way so that it will flow and move with the music. Once it’s finished, I post the show to the web and send out an e-mail alert to everyone in my personal and professional universe. For clients, they get reminded that I’m out there without my having to employ the standard “hey-got-any-voiceover-work-you-need-done?” marketing technique common to so many in this business. If my clients click through and listen to the show, all the better! In fact, that’s how I landed a 2006 imaging contract for a TV station in the midwest. The promotions director heard the podcast I did that poked fun at the techniques employed by local television stations to promote themselves. Then he called me up and made me their new voice. The irony was inescapable.

My e-mail is jeffhoyt@greaterradio.com. If you’ve been thinking about creating your own podcast, I’m always up for talking about it.
