The
Future of Voiceover's
Hold Your Tongue…Possibly Forever
by Peter Drew “Do we need to cast a voice-over
talent for this project?”
That’s a valid question any producer might ask when creating
an advertisement, corporate audio-video presentation, video game,
etc. Of course, the answer depends on what elements the producer
and client feel will best communicate with the audience. For a radio
ad, a fully sung jingle with no voice-over could work best. A TV
spot or corporate narration might be most effective using scrolling
graphic and text, again without an announcer. But very soon producers
could be pondering whether their productions need a voice over talent
for a more disturbing reason. Vocal utterances produced by air passing
through folds of tissue and formed by lips, teeth, and tongue may,
simply put, become obsolete. Yes, the “virtual voice talent”
may very well become a reality.........More

Things
I've learned about Talent Demos.....
I receive talent demos, lots of talent demos.. sent to me
with the hope of
getting on our Williamson Evans talent roster. As a result, there
are several things I¹ve noticed that many new talents (and
sometimes the seasoned pros too), could do better. So I'd like
to share some of my thoughts with you.
First, let's do some math. I get at least one demo a week and
have been at Williamson Evans for about 10 years. Therefore, I
have a stock pile of over 500 cassettes, CD¹s and MP3s. Though
this volume may seem overwhelming, most of the demos are not.
You need to do something to make yours stand out in the crowd.......More

The
Essence of Editing
By Dave Rosemann
During the recording
process there are always unforeseen factors that arise. Even with
voice tracking, which is often only one single audio track, imperfections
always need to be addressed. Admittedly, we are all human and we
all make mistakes. A voice talent being able to track exactly to
a copy, with correct cadence and accentuation, and without breathing,
is impossible. This is where skilled editing comes into play.....More

VO
Professional is a Paramedic
Dan Hurst contributes to New Orleans
The pictures don't do it justice. That's what I thought when I first
drove through New Orleans shortly after Hurricane Katrina struck.
I was a volunteer EMT with Heart To Heart International, a disaster
relief agency headquartered in Kansas City, my home town. As is their
normal mode of operation, they had put a medical team in place within
hours after the hurricane hit and I had been invited to serve with
the team for a couple of weeks.
So, I sent out an email to all my voice clients letting them know
I would not be around for awhile, begging their understanding, and
promising I would be back in two weeks....More

Web
site Tips
Using FTP to update your web site
If you want to
update the contents of your web site without relying on your webmaster
you should consider learning how to use FTP software. FTP or File
Transfer Protocol is the method used to transfer files to and from
a web site.
To get started you will need to download/purchase and install FTP
software. I recommend WS_FTP Home - it sells for a modest $35-40 US.
http://www.wsftp.com/purchase/products/ws_ftp_home.asp
for purchase information.
Or you can download and try free for a 30 day trial period here http://www.download.com/3000-2160-10018456.html
To learn how to use WS_FTP, an excellent tutorial can be found a http://www.wsftp.com/support/ws_ftp/home/index.asp
