| VO
Marketing
Connie Terwilliger, one of CV's Founding Members had her article
Voice Over 101 recently published in AV Video Multimedia Producer
magazine. The article is now online through a number of DMN E-zines
and E-newsletters. This is a very thorough look at what the VO world
is all about. We would like to give Connie a big "Thank You"
for the kind plug she gave Commercial Voices.com. Read all about
it here.

Imitation/Impersonation?
Be careful!!!
Thanks to CV's Scott Fischer for this waker-upper.
Son of John Facenda, NFL voice, sues Campbell
Soup over ad
Associated Press
PHILADELPHIA - John Facenda Jr. has sued Campbell Soup Co. and an
advertising firm over a Chunky Chili ad that allegedly misappropriates
his late father's voice.Facenda charges in the federal court suit
that the company spoke to him in May about using a "sound-alike"
narrator in radio and television ads this NFL season, but later
said they had were changing course.
Campbell's spokesman John Faulkner said the commercial was voiced
by a man with a similar - but "not a sound-alike" - voice.John
Facenda Sr. was a prominent Philadelphia broadcaster who long served
as the dramatic voice of NFL Films before his 1984 death.John Jr.
of Havertown, the heir to his estate, said he was watching television
on Aug. 30 when he heard a familiar baritone in the ad, which promotes
Campbell's chili for football tailgates.
Faulkner identified the voice in the "Tailgating" commercial
as that of Earl Mann, one of three people hired since Facenda's
1984 death to serve as an official NFL voice."The only voice
that is universally associated with NFL Films is that of John Facenda,"
said Facenda's lawyer, Tracy Paul Hunt.Faulkner declined comment
on the lawsuit, saying he had not seen it. However, he noted that
Campbell's is the official soup of the NFL.Officials of New York-based
Young & Rubicam, the advertising firm, could not be reached
for comment. The lawsuit seeks a retaping of the commercials with
a non-Facenda-like voice, and unspecified monetary damages.

Melinda Walsh.....shares her movie experience with Christopher Reeves
Hi there,
I had the honor this past summer of working with a very special
person on what was to be his final project, although we didn't know
that at the time. "The Brooke Ellison
Story", directed by Christopher Reeve, was filmed in New
Orleans in June 2004 and I had a supporting role in it.
Hope you enjoy,
Melinda
Thank you for sharing Melinda, Chris will always be a "Superman"
to all of us. Ed

Producers+?
How it works…………..
Producers+ is a talent search or a casting call feature which
gathers auditions for clients wanting a choice of voices. After
filling in the information on our Producers+
page we contact the client by phone to confirm and clarify
the information received. This is also meant to be a background
check and to reaffirm that CV can supply him with all the talent
he needs and that we will deliver on time and on or under budget.
Once we are happy with this info we upload all details to a secret
URL and forward it to our Platinum Members who decide whether
they want to record and submit a portion of the client's script
so he can make his voice choice. On our "Preview/Download"
page the client will find links to all demos which are listed
as Male 1,2,3,4 and so on. A sample of what the client sees is
here.
You will notice that there are no names or prices associated with
the auditions. Our client makes his voice(s) choice(s) based on
talent alone because he knows all talents
are priced within his budget range. He makes his choice, we confirm
with the VO talent all details, send our CV talent the script,
and then send it on to the client. Presto! Everyone is happy!

How,
What, Who, Where????
Search engines are great if you use them to their fullest capabilities.
We use Google a lot and we ask all sorts of ridiculous questions.
You will be amazed with the answers and solutions they can come
up with. Here are some examples:
"how do I reduce ambient noise in Sound Forge".
"Recipe for Adobo sauce".
"What time is it in Delhi, India".
"Adobe Audition vs Sound Forge".
"Movie post production companies".

Mike
Weiner says.................
It All Starts With Copy
I once heard somewhere that the words on a page, like the ones
you are reading right now, are really just visual, graphical representations
of the thoughts that are in one person's mind (mine), being transferred
to another person's mind (yours), through the medium of paper. These
pages are a way of transmitting what’s in my head to your
head.
Acting is really about the art of Communicating a message on behalf
of the author, finding the author or writer's intention for the
message, its underlying emotional energy, and the "truth"
in the delivery of the copy to an appropriate person. It’s
also about getting out of the way of the copy and letting the words
come through as they were meant to.
Our job as voice-over actors (and don't let any stage actor who
has never done voice-overs fool you--- we ARE actors), is to take
these “graphical representations” on a page and convert
them into the spoken word. But one thing our 3rd grade teachers
didn't tell us (or know, for that matter) is that the way we speak
out loud is quite different from the way we read silently with our
eyes. If you'd like to test this for yourself, get a dictation cassette
recorder and turn it on to record yourself having a conversation
on the telephone with a friend. You will only hear your part of
the conversation. Now transcribe it on to paper and see how it reads.
You'd probably flunk 3rd grade grammar! But surely you communicate
well, else you wouldn't be considering a career in this end of the
communications business, much less have made it this far in life,
right?
Advertising copy can be some of the most creative storytelling there
is. (There are those who would insist that much of it is fiction,
too!) So, for the exercises we are going to do together, we’ll
be focusing on commercial ad copy, rather than long form narration
scripts. The concepts are essentially the same.
I think it is important at some point for you to understand that
your role, as the Communicator of the message on behalf of the client,
requires you to truly understand the client's needs before you start
talking. That may seem obvious, but taking a step or two back in
the process of how you came to be sitting or standing in front of
the microphone, reading these words, is important if you are going
to deliver their communication in a believable manner.
