Producer's
Corner.
Stats
Happy New Year,
everyone!
Having come from an IT background in a former life, I was discussing
web sites with a friend the other day and the topic of web site
stats/traffic came up. He was curious about the meaning and usefulness
of these numbers his ISP kept sending him every month. Perfect
- if he has trouble understanding these, there must be others
- what a perfect topic for an article or two!
So I will digress from the usual topic of audio production this
month to discuss web traffic and web stats....more

Interview
with a VoiceoverGuy
by Peter Drew I was contacted by a new media
publication to do an interview about voiceovers. They sent questions
for me to answer via email. I sent back my responses to their questions,
but realized later that I needed to make a change before I signed
off on it, giving the publisher permission to quote me. Rather than
make the change, the publisher decided to pull the interview from
publication instead of making the change. So, I thought, instead
of wasting a perfectly good interview, I’d publish it myself.
Here’s that article, intact except for a few changes I decided
to make, since I’m now, well, in essence, interviewing myself.

Podcasting
for Fun and (yes) Profit.....by
Jeff Hoyt
Anyone who makes
a living in this voiceover biz of ours will tell you that they
have the best job on the planet. I still get up every morning
and genuflect before my ISDN unit, giving thanks for the lifestyle
it affords me, along with the time to pursue other creative outlets.
For me, podcasting has become a fun and natural way to fill the
gaps between sessions. It’s the ultimate “radio aerobic
workout,” requiring creativity and discipline as a writer,
producer, and performer. ........More

What's
In? Natural is in.
From Edge Studio
Today, voice-over producers generally prefer voice talent to
use a 'natural' and 'conversational' vocal delivery. Note that this
is not usually the case for promos, hard-sell style, and character
work, which often require an affected style delivery.
* IMPORTANT * Most voice talent mistakenly assume that 'natural'
and 'conversation' means "nonchalant." It does not. 'Natural'
and 'conversational' mean ANY voice that is used in real life, such
as excited, compassionate, angry, sarcastic, funny, nonchalant,
and so forth.
Therefore when a producer directs you to be 'natural' and 'conversational',
they mean 'unaffected'. It may be necessary to ask them what emotion
(tone of voice) they desire, such as excited, compassionate, angry,
nonchalant, happy, perky, and so forth......More

Promotion.....Reciprocal
Links improve Search Engine Ranking...by Rick Gordon
Reciprocal links
is the online equivalent of word-of-mouth advertising. And just
like its offline cousin, it's the most effective way to get new
business. Reciprocal links between sites that share a common
thread of interest are even better and help both the sites immensely.
CV has put in a lot of hard
work and care in building a 'showcase' link-directory. We value what
you have to say and would like to do our best in extending your reach
while you do the same for us.
Check out our Links
page do a search to see if you are already listed.
Contact us if you are not there and we will be happy to upload your
link. We trade text for text or graphic for graphic. Sorry but graphic
links must be 171 X 52 pixels in order to retain the integrity of
the page. You can choose from a variety of CV links here.

Web
site Tips
What to expect from your hosting company?
It can be somewhat
overwhelming trying to choose a web hosting company. What follows
is a brief rundown of the thing you should be looking for.
The first thing to look at is the infrastructure of the building that
the web server is in. There should be an uninterrupted power supply;
excellent heating, ventilation, and AC; and the building needs to
be
physical secure. Any reputable host will have redundant connections
to the Internet to ensure your site is always available, and will
provide a minimum service level agreement (SLA). Most SLA's stipulate
a minimum uptime per month (as a percentage) and the consequences
to the host if they do not meet that level. If a host does fall below
the level stated in the SLA you are usually entitled to reimbursement
of a portion of your monthly hosting fees.
In the area of tools and features you should ask the following questions:
- Will they register your domain name (some will do it for free or
a reduced price)?
- How much disk space are you given? How much transfer per month are
you allowed? If you go over, what is the charge?
- Do they track web site statistics so you know how many people visit
your site
- Do they provide a web based control panel for your site?
- Do they support scripting languages like PHP or ASP?
- Do they provide database support, and does it cost extra?
- Do they provide e-commerice support and online shopping carts? Is
there an extra fee? (usually is)

different hosting companies.
