Wanted.........VO
Talents who are Visionaries
We've had many inquiries about this new VO business opportunity
and perhaps a little more information here is necessary. Talking.ca
is not about selling you a transmitter, rather another vehicle
for you to attract VO work. Visit Talking.ca
and check out every page. You will surely think of some of your
existing clients who could use this terrific advertising and promotion
tool and in doing so they will require voice overs ....... that
is where you come in.
The Realtor you do cable and radio/TV ads for? The car dealership
at the four way intersection where travellers are stopped at the
traffic lights for 1-2 minutes? The Bar/Restaurant who agressively
compete with new menu items, food and drink specials and weekend
entertainment? The shop in the strip mall with the 500-600 parking
spaces? The potential is unlimited.
This is a snowball..........got mitts?

Foundation..........good
idea?
Much as you cannot build a house from the roof down, you cannot build
to a performance read by trying to go for it without laying the groundwork.
So that's what this stuff is about. I also know that the limitations
of what we are going to do here may not be as powerful as if you were
physically immersed in a workshop or coaching session with another
set of ears listening, but it's a start. Don't cheat yourself.
You are going to need a tape recorder for the exercises in this book.
A small dictation cassette will work fine.
First, let's get you started on what I call the "calibration"
read. This is to find out where you are right now, and what you can
do with a piece of copy at your current level of performance. Later,
you’ll re-record this same script after working through a number
of techniques explained in this book. Then you can compare the two,
noting your progress.
At this point you should have at least looked at two or three pieces
of ad copy that you have read out loud to test for its "verbacity"
(my term for the ability of a piece of written copy to be verbalized
easily without comprehensive editing). You might want to read it OUT
LOUD (notice how that part is stressed!) to someone else and then
ask that person if they understood the message clearly the first time
around.
You may already be aware that if you close your eyes while listening
to someone read, it changes your perspective. This is because we don’t
sound the way that we look. Listening to others speak with your eyes
closed gives you a totally different feel. The term used is “audio-visual,”
not just “visual” because audio can allow you to create
imagery in your own mind. However, if you are shown the pictures that
accompany the audio, your mind doesn’t have to work to visualize
the imagery. It takes away from your natural ability to imagine and
visualize for yourself when the pictures are there for you already.

Connie says
"hello"?
| Connie Terwilliger contacts and captivates
her warm market on a quarterly basis - regularly reminding
them of her presence. She also spends time actively looking
for and pre-qualifying potential new clients. While Connie
does teach one class per semester and writes an occasional
script, her voiceover work pays most of the bills. Keep in
mind that this does not happen by luck or by accident.....this
is her "Hello" to clients for 2005. |
Hello,
I know I am not the first to wish you a Happy New Year,
but I hit the ground with both feet running last week, and this
is the first chance I have had to compose a short greeting.
Here’s a quick update. Projects have included everything
from voice mail to interactive training – on-hold messages
to TV spots – radio ads to tribute messages – in-store
announcements to IVR. Lots of medical material in the mix including
work for Kaiser, MedVantx and Kinetikos Medical Incorporated.
And a whole series of interactive training material for the US
Army.
As you may know, I am also a writer and had an article published
in AV Video Multimedia Producer magazine (now called Studio Monthly)
that is still available online at http://www.avvideo.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=28453.
New and Returning Clients Boost 4th Quarter
It was a busy Fall and early Winter here with several interesting
projects for new clients including Bell Visage Spa, Colorado State
University, Hilton Grand Vacations Club, Design Quest, NetOffice
and Venafi.
These new projects were worked in and around the material coming
in from regular clients producing sound files for such companies
as Kohl’s, Saks, Target, Home Depot, Babies-R-Us, Lowes,
9to5blog, Insight Investigations, Bealls Department Store, Stop
and Shop, Vein Clinic of Orlando, Noratec, and Maher Terminals.
Demos are available on CD or online at www.voiceover-talent.com
– or email a script sample for a custom audition.
MCA-I Elects Connie Terwilliger as President Elect
You know the old saying – “Ask a busy person?”
As if my voice work, community theater performances and teaching
schedule weren’t enough, I decided to toss my hat in the
ring for MCA-I and will be President of the association in 2006.
MCA-I, formerly ITVA, is the professional organization for media
communicators.
Check us out – www.mca-i.org.
May your 2005 be busy and bright! And hope to work with you on
a project soon.
Regards,
Connie Terwilliger

Bob
Ace says......
Rick,
Thought I should drop you a note and let you know that as of
yesterday, (Dec2/04) I have become one of three "Super-Saturday-Sale"
spokesmen for Meijer Department stores. The store is a giant in
the Midwest (Chicago, St. Louis etc.). It is a high profile, good
paying gig. Exactly what I was looking for when I decided to join
CV.com. With the help of your service, and your personal guidance
and support, I have gone from being a local nobody 75 miles from
Chicago, to being a "coast-to-coast" talent. From Fresno
to Trenton, CV.com has no doubt played a major role in a "beyond
my wildest dreams" kind of experience.....all in about 60
days!
Sincerely,
Bob Ace
CV Platinum Member
(Bob's only web site presence is his CV site......personal web
site under construction)
Thanks muchly Bob, very much appreciated. (listen to
Bob at the top of CV's Testimonial
page.)

Computer
Maintenance?
As a followup to last month's discussion about spyware and protecting
your computer against it, Microsoft recently released a public
beta of their new AntiSpyware offering. No word as to when a final
release will be coming or how much it will retail for but the
good news is that the beta is available as a free download. It
requires IE 6.0, 64 Megs of RAM, a minimum of a 300 MHz processor
and Windows 2000, XP or Server 2003 as the operating system. The
following is the link to Microsoft's home page for the new AntiSpyware
product.

Tips Over the past months a
number of people have asked me how they can create rotating banner
adds on their site without having to learn PHP or ASP. Here is the
answer!
Banners consist of two things. The first is an image. The second
is the website address you want the user to visit when they click
on the banner. Your banners images must have the filenames banner1.gif,
banner2.gif ... banner10.gif and so on. The numbers in filenames
of your banners must be sequential.
To randomly select and display a banner, copy and paste the following
JavaScript code into the code of your web page:
<script language="JavaScript">
var aLinks = new Array();
aLinks[aLinks.length] = "http://www.crystalbaymedia.com";
aLinks[aLinks.length] = "http://www.commercialvoices.com";
var nRandomBanner = Math.round( Math.random()
* (aLinks.length-1) );
document.write("<a href=\""+aLinks[nRandomBanner]+"\"><img
src=\"banner"+(nRandomBanner+1)+".gif\" border=\"0\"
></a>");
</script>
The code you just pasted into your file contains two banners -
one for Crystal Bay Media (banner1.gif) and one for Commercial Voices
(banner2.gif).
You must now change the links in the JavaScript code that you pasted
into your file. If you look above to the code sample, they are highlighted
in red. If you have more than two banners you can add others by
adding another link. All the links must be listed in the same order
as their filenames. For example the link for banner1.gif must be
listed first and the link for banner4.gif must be listed fourth.
Remember to save your file. Congratulations you now have rotating
banners!
