You don’t really have to brand yourself before you’re ready, but good branding can get you a ton of work. This easily identifies you and what you do without explanation. Something catchy and original. There are many forms of Branding. Slogans, logos, marketing materials (Pamphlets etc.)
In the MIC & ME Voice Biz Handbook I talk more in-depth about marketing/branding, but I’ll leave with some tips that you can start with.
Let’s start with your slogan. What is the phrase that will say it all? Can you follow through on your promise? My brand slogan is My Voice, Your Way! I can follow through with this slogan. If it was something like, Fast as a Cat, well can you really promise that? Does it express what you do without question?
One of my mentors Penny Abshire is brilliant with her marketing/branding. Penny Abshire, it just makes cents. She uses Pennies in everything she does…even her business cards are made from copper pennies (real large ones) So be creative.
Logos- if I see another logo with a microphone in it. WOW, this is saturated and too common. Be original. Use your creative juices to keep your logo contemporary, hip, fun, but most importantly reflect your personality. The message needs to be instant, creative and clear and this isn’t an easy task.
One more tip….business cards. Don’t forget about the back sides of your business cards. This is wasted space if it’s not used, but remember to keep some space on the back of your card so that people can write notes on it. Pictures on your business cards are controversial in the world of voice, as the picture could stereocast you, however when I have a face on a business card, I always remember them and why I wanted their card to begin with. Use your own discretion.
Make all your branding match. Business card/logo/website/pamphlets etc. should all be consistent.
Start playing with ideas and bring your personality to the table. Have fun.
