How many times have you been working on a project for a solid client when you have thought "Gee, I should do something nice for this long term client. I want to solidify my business relationship with him and I need more projects"? "Maybe I could add an extra voice or two, just a few lines... but that would add to my costs and I really can't afford it. I'm sure he would be impressed but do you think some of my colleagues might help me for free"? Multi voice productions really do sound pro.
Bingo! All you have to do is ask. That is a very smart move in the VO business and you would really be surprised who would offer to help you. After all, if someone asked you for a few words or a sentence or two would you refuse them? Would you charge them a fee? I don't think so. Maybe next time you will ask them to donate? Hey, this might really get something going:) It might be a good idea to offer your colleague a token $25 even if you have to take it out of your own pocket. Then if the client likes the multivoice idea build in a reasonable budget for future projects. You will not be able to continously ask for these freebies.
I have
had occasions to ask some of our CV members for a word or two from time to time
and they have been most generous in sending me what I needed along with a few
variations on the read. They were happy to offer their talents with no request
for payment at all. And yes, a few have asked me for the same. What a great
way to beef up a recording project with professional VO help and there are other
benefits too.
Collaborating
on corporate narrations and commercial production can be hugely beneficial to
you as a VO professional:
So I will blatantly make this insane offer here and now. If any CV member would like me to do a bit part in one or many of their projects all they have to do is ask and ye shall receive. But....you will owe me one....fair? I like to impress my clients too:)
