| Is
Real Radio coming back?
Satellite`s deliver a huge amount of information
and Ottawa companies have played a key role in the growth of radio
beamed from the edge of space. 5 Ottawa firms provided technology
to get the first satellite radio system on the air and Telesat still
manages the operation of their satellites.
American satellite radio is several years old...Canada`s
decision on allowing such service may come within weeks but many
consumers aren`t waiting for the law to catch up with reality .
Live from the studios of xm radio in Washington...
nearly 70 music channels .. an equal number of news and sports stations
and a couple of dozen more with weather and traffic reports. You
pay 13 dollars a month and pick what you like.
Andre DeRouchie of Ottawa who owns Derand Auto loves satellite radio...
he uses it and sells the technology at his after market auto accessory
store in Ottawa. He started carrying the equipment for satellite
radio just a few months ago. He admits the system does not provide
perfect coverage but it still beats conventional radio.
On average DeRouchie is selling half a dozen units a week... and
he only provides the equipment - not the signal. Legally you can
only subscribe if you have a U.S.. address. He says consumers are
tired of heavy commercial content on radio there are two U.S.. satellite
firms.. xm and sirius ..both are losing money but in the last few
months xm`s customer base increased nearly 70 percent - to nearly
4 million.
In Canada two companies hope to start satellite service, the governement
go ahead is expected anytime. At the Toronto auto show this year
satellite radio was a feature attraction. Most auto makers will
offer satellite radio as standard next year .xm radio introduced
traffic and weather reports in several major markets.. that has
regular U.S.. radio stations angry.. they say satellite radio is
trying to move into their territory... the fight is on.
Satellite radio technology is already moving into a 2nd wave.. these
handheld units pull in the signal and can then be plugged into ports
that could be in your car, your home or your boat or hooked on your
belt. Consumer Reports Magazine says reception is not the best...an
antenna is a must but it can be a bit awkward. Will all this technology
unseat conventional radio? If nothing else the struggle could create
better radio for consumers.
Will radio listeners demand local content? Satellite
radio hopes to provide some so will local stations beef up their
content to their hot market? In doing so do you think just by some
minor miracle that they will hire more local on air personalities?
Your thoughts, comments are more than welcome.

"Voice Actors
Guide to Home Recording".........by Harlan Hogan and Jeffrey
Fisher
Review....My first comments "Geez
I wish these guys hadn't written this book".
It's about a 2-3 hour relaxed read and very well thought and laid
out. Before investing in a home studio including the equipment,
the studio design, the computer and software you really should
invest the $25 bucks into some solid advice that will save you
hundreds. The technical tips alone as described by Jeff are well
worth the investment. Harlan's marketing savvy and soft sell approach
to putting yourself in your own studio and putting you on the
VO map is both educational and entertaining. There are even a
couple of plugs in there for CV which is greatly appreciated.........go
buy the book........ and then go by the book. Here's a page
in pdf format.

Directing
Voiceovers..........the beginning
By Peter Drew
Take Your Copy to the Woodshed
You've booked your first voiceover session, a 60 second radio ad,
at a local production house. You arrive in a positive frame of mind,
relaxed, and read to perform. After exchanging pleasantries with
everyone involved with the session, the studio engineer hands you
the copy. After reading through the script, determining your approach
to the read, and consulting with the session's director(s), you're
ready to nail the spot on the first take.
Sure, hitting a home run on your first at bat in front of the mic
is possible, but by "woodshedding" or marking up your
copy first, you establish visual cues that will help you give the
director and client your best voice-over performance. Visualing
indicating word inflections, words that need additional stress,
pauses for pacing and effect, and attitude changes within the copy,
creates a framework for a consistent performance, whether you nail
the read on the first take or the tenth one........More

CV Local ad campaign
We are biting the bullet and testing out our local #1 newspaper
in their online edition. CV has purchased 126,000 banner ad impressions
in the Ottawa
Citizen. Our huge ad (729 X 90) will be placed on top.
We have a 1 million population and the paper's index page is quite
popular. Ottawa likes to call itself Silicon North because of
the number of high tech companies located here and that number
has been growing somewhat lately. This is the capital of Canada
so we are also looking for Government productions. Our campaign
begins next week and goes for 2 months with 2 different banner
ads. Both of course are CV related, here is the ad for CommercialVoices.com
and here is the one for Talking.ca
The campaign is targeted to our two largest telephone area codes
and the thought is that we are just a click away.
Have you tried this in your market? Was it successful? Did you
get your ROI? If you are a CV member email us your banner and
we'll promote it in our next Newsletter. Contact us here.

Tips
Search Engine Rankings: Fact and Fiction
I am often asked how to get a web site listed in the top results
of the search engines. There is no easy answer . . . beware companies
claiming they can guarantee results.
Most web search engines such as Google, MSN Search and Yahoo use
literally millions of criteria to rank sites. These criteria are
kept secret to protect the integrity of the page rankings. It has
been my experience that if you follow three simple tips, your ranking
will increase.
Be upfront and honest. Including “search keywords”
in your site that have nothing to do with your products or services
may actually decrease your ranking. Trade links with other reputable
sites that serve a similar market. The key is to find quality sites
that have high search engine rankings.
Keep your site structure simple and consistent. This makes it easier
for the search engines to index and rank your site. Do not use HTML
frames and the site menus should work even if JavaScript is not
enabled.
